What’s Considered a Veterinary Emergency?

For animals, their emergencies aren’t much different than humans. If you aren’t sure if what they’re experiencing is an emergency, here are some examples:

COMMON MEDICAL

  • Severe dehydration due to continuous diarrhea or vomiting
  • Heart Failure
  • Red or swollen gums
  • A diabetic crisis
  • Internal Bleeding
  • Pain or bleeding (i.e., when eating or when the mouth or gums are touched)

TOXICITY

  • Overdose of medication
  • Ingestion of toxic human food
  • Ingestion of common household products, such as detergent

PHYSICAL TRAUMA

  • Hit by a vehicle
  • Attacked by a wild animal or another pet

Treating Your Pet’s Emergency

Your pet will first be triaged to determine their critical level. This allows us to balance the different degrees of urgency to our patients. To save pets with the most critical cases, we do not work on a first-come, first-serve basis.

When we see your pet, we will complete a diagnosis and come up with an appropriate treatment plan. We will review this with you and address any questions or concerns you might have.
